How to Do Keyword Research and Use the Keyword Planner

The Keyword Planner is a very helpful tool from Google Adwords. It allows people to analyze hundreds of keywords relevant to the kind of niche that their businesses are in. Although it is a paid search tool but the information it provides is no doubt very helpful.

Step 1: Sign Up for Gmail and Google Adwords Keyword Planner

For you to be able to get started, you need to have a Gmail account. After signing up for your Gmail account, sign up for the Keyword Planner. Search in Google for Keyword Planner, and you will find in one of the search results the Google Adwords Keyword Planner. Sign in to your Google Adwords . After logging in to your Keyword Planner, you will be taken to a screen where you can see options such as:

• Search for new keywords using a phrase, website or category
• Get search volume, data and trends
• Multiply keyword lists to get a new keyword.

Step 2: Search for new keywords using a phrase, website or category

Click on the first option, “Search for new keywords using a phrase, website or category”.

Step 3: Enter your product name.

When you click this option, you can now see a search box where you can type your product name or the service that your company offers. For example, for my site Bdancewear.com, I sell yoga pants, so I type in the words “yoga pants”. Then hit the “Get Ideas” button at the bottom.

Step 4: Add your chosen keywords to your plan.

You will then be taken to another screen where you can see the “average monthly searches” for the keyword you entered. As you click on your chosen keyword, save it to your plan by clicking the “add to plan” button at the last column on the right. Make sure that the keyword you choose is relevant to your site.

Step 5 : Download your keyword planner as excel spreadsheet file.

Once you are done adding all your chosen keywords to your plan, you may choose to download it as a spreadsheet. Just click on the download icon that looks like an arrow pointing downwards which you can see at the right side of your screen.

Things to Keep in Mind when Researching Keywords and Using Keyword Planner

Beware of using the word “cheap” in your keywords.

For me using the word “cheap” in your keywords may not be a smart move. This is true especially if your company sells high quality products or services. In my ecommerce site, I do not use the word “cheap” as part of my keyword search because my company sells high quality products. If people want to search for something cheap I am not the right company for them. They can go to Wal-Mart or any other place but not in my Bdancewear.com site.

Choose keywords that have high volume search result.

Opt for keywords that have high volume search result as shown in the Google Keyword Planner. If you also find one that has high search volume but the bidding price is just low and you see on Google search result that only very few of your competitors are using the same keywords, then go for it.

Check your competitors using the same keyword via Google Search.

Another tip that I would like to share when you are searching for the right keywords to use, before you make a bid on that specific keyword via Keyword Planner, try to check first if it is competitive. You can do this by typing the keyword on Google Search, and the search results would tell you who among your competitors are using the same keywords. This will also help you make early assessments whether it is easier for your site to rank using the keywords you chose. If you see in Google search results that there are plenty of competitors who are using the same keywords then chances are you will also have a hard time making your site rank using that keyword.

Take note of those keywords that you can also use in your articles.

The good thing about using the Google Adwords Keyword Planner is that it also allows you to see several other keywords that you haven’t thought about but can also be used for writing articles or as another product category for your ecommerce site.

Check which keyword is better.

For example, my site is selling yoga clothes, so when I have to choose between the keywords yoga pants versus yoga shorts, I will check the Keyword Planner to see which keyword is better.
