In this video, I will be taking you through mine and Ariana’s audition for Shark Tank. I will be auditioning for Performance Nut Butter while she will be auditioning for VinoCards. We will be sharing with you every step of the audition as well as some tips on how you can get to Shark Tank.
Here are some of the basic steps in getting into Shark Tank:
Auditioning – There is a lot of different auditions. It doesn’t have to be Miami. They do tryouts all over the country. One is in LA this coming March 14th. You can also submit an email. When you go to the audition, make sure you have the printed paperwork that you are going to submit.
1-Minute Pitch – During the audition, you should have a 1-minute pitch prepared. They will also be throwing in questions and initiate conversation on why you would be a good fit for Shark Tank.
Audition Result – If accepted, they will give you a call in two weeks to inform that you’ve made it passed the 1st round.
Submit Intro Video – This is for the 2nd round of the audition. You will need to submit a video on why you would be a good fit for Shark Tank. After this, there are other several rounds that you will need to go through.
On our first day in Miami, it was basically taking in the sites and filling out Shark Tank applications. On the application itself, it asked all the questions that you would expect. Here are some examples;
Describe your product in detail..
What is the valuation? How much are you willing to give up for what percentage of your company?
What the money would go towards?
How much you made in the last year?
How much you are planning to make for the upcoming year? How much for the next year?
When filling out the applications, keep in mind that it is a sales pitch. Try to phase your answers in a way that make your business look good. Make sure that every single answer gives them a reason to put you on the show.
One of the tactics we used that, hopefully, would make us stand out was printing out the Shark Tank applications on resume paper to make it unique from a stack of white papers. After filling out, we practiced our 1-minute sales pitch to prepare for the actual auditions.
During the audition, you will have to go in line and wait for the handing out of the Shark Tank wristbands. One you receive one, you are allowed to go home, have some breakfast, and come back later for the sales pitch.
One tip to remember is, as they say in Hollywood, you either be one of the firsts to audition or the last to audition. In the way the human mind works, those who come in the middle are often clumped together. Another thing to take note is to avoid auditioning before lunch. In a study done on prisoners applying for parole, it was found that judges are least likely to approve before lunch because they were hungry, annoyed, and weren’t likely to take a chance.
After the audition, there were some things that we thought we could have done better. One was to elaborate on the YouTube channel that I have which is full of entrepreneurs that I want to help and inspire. Ariana’s was to talk about some of the answers in the application that she wants the panel to know about even without them asking.
For the sales pitch, keep in mind that there are two important things that it needs to have. One is good product. Shark Tank only accepts companies with good products. The second one is the story. You have to remember that Shark Tank is a television show. It’s all about hooking the audience in. When you are pitching on Shark Tank, you need to tell your story.
One of the biggest things that I learned this week has something to do with the way I interacted with Ariana. All week, I was discouraging her as I didn’t think that she was ready to go to Shark Tank. However, she was really excited to audition. It made me think about a lot of things, including my own self talk. A lot of times, I say to myself “you don’t deserve it yet,” but maybe I really do. It’s all about the opportunity to get into Shark Tank. The big thing I learned from this is to enjoy the journey. If you are interested in going out for Shark Tank, then try it out.
