Branding Your Ecommerce Business Guide

In this list I’m going to show you how you can create your own brand and here as you can see I have a couple different logos and a couple different brands that have become wildly successful. So we’re gonna use some of the principles that they’ve used I’m gonna show you how you can create your own brand and keep in mind that you are gonna have a different strategy than a lot of these big brands you have a different size budget. So your branding is gonna be a lot more niche down this is gonna be one of the principles that we underscore over and over again. So first off with creating your brand you need to know what is your niche.
you’re not for everyone you’re not McDonald’s you’re not you know whatever you’re not the big you’re not Walmart you’re not this big brand you’re something there’s something specific about you why do people want to come to your website and buy from you ask yourself that over and over again why would someone buy from me versus Amazon that’s really the key question Amazon is the big you know 100-pound gorilla in the room they are the giant you’re up against them.

So what makes you special and why would someone want to buy from you we’ll come back to this later but this is a very important point. So the next thing we’re talking about here is creating an avatar who’s your ideal person that would buy from you we’ll talk some in-depth in depth about how to create an avatar but this is really important for you to do early on in your business because you’re going to come back over and over again to this idea. So after that, we’re going to talk about coming up with your company and domain name a lot of people make mistakes when they’re coming up with their company name or their domain name.

So we’ll I’m gonna give you some tips on how to do that and then last we’re gonna talk about a logo and there’s a couple different tips on how to create a logo but we’ll get to that of course later in this. So first thing is your site is not for everyone you need to narrow down your niche right from the beginning unless you have a multi-million dollar budget then that’s fine you can be the next amazon.com but chances are you’re not chances are you’re starting out you don’t have a big enough budget that you can run ads on the Superbowl I guess that really should be the litmus test can you give a big enough budget that you can run ads on the Superbowl if you don’t knit down I mean even if you do you probably want to niche down. So think about what makes your site special why would someone buy from you rather than Amazon remember Amazon they give to day shipping they’re easy it’s you know over and over again people are going and buying from them.

So think over and over again about this. So this is my website. So let’s use an example of this now this website is not for everyone in fact this website is not even for me I don’t like this website it’s pink it’s you know it’s very colorful it’s very girly but I did this all on purpose I want people that come to this website that are my potential customers to think that this site was made for them. So do that with your website make your website? So when your ideal customer comes to it they’re like oh my gosh someone read my mind and this site was built for me.

So I purposely made my main color be pink because I knew that that’s a girl color it’s something that when moms come to this site it’s gonna remind them that they’re buying this for their daughter it’s obviously if they’re buying it for their daughter they’re willing to spend a little bit more money than they might on themselves it’s reminding them or what it’s like to be a little girl there’s a lot of psychology I put into here but basically the moral of all this is that my site is not for everyone and that’s what’s made it successful Amazon is for everyone if you’re buying dance clothing you don’t want to go to Amazon and the reason is because it’s like going to Walmart to buy your dance clothing a dance mom is spending five thousand dollars a year on dance lessons they’re not going to buy the cheapest dance shorts they can. So use that idea within your own Ecommerce business remember that people buying from you it’s not just going to be about price you’re not going to win on the price factor alone where you’re gonna win is by creating an environment for them where they feel welcome where they feel a connection that’s the key with your Ecommerce business. So it should really only be good for a very small amount of people if it’s if it’s good for everyone it’s not great for anyone.

So if the ask yourself is if there’s only one person you could sell to who would it be. So this is not only a good tip for creating your brand identity but it’s also how we create an avatar. So for those people that don’t know an avatar is basically a fake person that you create. So you can market to them. So you can use them to know whether or not you or website or your marketing works I’ll give you a quick example an avatar that I might create for be dancer is a mom years old named Jill I it’s probably not the best name I could come up with it but anyways a year old mom named Jill who has a five year old daughter that’s been dancing or let’s say a year old daughter that’s been dancing since she was five years old Jill likes to buy from Lululemon she likes to buy from Macy’s and Victoria’s Secret.

So now that I know all this stuff about Jill I can probably figure out she likes to do yoga and blah blah blah this is basically a fake person that would be my ideal customer and what can I learn from this well she likes Victoria’s Secret Macy’s and Lululemon maybe I should go to their websites maybe I should see what they’re doing what kind of marketing message they have. So that’s part of creating your avatar. So ask yourself who’s the one person if you could sell two you would then ask yourself if you only if you had a thousand people that you could sell to now Kevin Kelley came out with this term a thousand true fans and what he was saying is if you have a thousand people that love you or your idea or whatever and they were each they loved.
So much they were willing to give you $100 you could make six figures a year easily. So keep that in mind it’s really your goal is to have , true fans and the cool thing about the thousand true fans is that person that really loves it is gonna tell their friends and they’re gonna spread the message for you. So your goal with your Ecommerce business is to target out of the million people in the United States to target , of them that should be your idea obviously you’re gonna target a lot more my website has had , customers and that’s you know I’ve had the principle of a thousand true fans since the beginning. So just because your goal is a target a thousand true fans doesn’t mean you’re only gonna ever have a thousand customers but it’s a great psychology to use when creating an avatar and when creating your website or any kind of marketing and promotional material.
So as far as creating your avatar to help get the ball rolling with you what’s your ideal customer what age is he or she what gender is he or she what’s their name. So if you have a more traditional let’s say you have someone that’s in their s or s they’re going to different name than someone that’s in their 40s 50s are they someone that’s a little more edgy or they someone that’s a little bit more conservative. So that’s a good reason why you want to come up with their name and also because then you can refer to them it’s like oh yeah Jill what Jill like this would you like the way that my website’s set up that’s the fake avatar I just created right now also ask yourself what do they like to do. So at the end of this module I have a task and at the bottom of this I have a link on this page with a worksheet showing you basically the kind of questions and how you can create an avatar I also recommend trying to find an image either in a magazine or online of what your avatar would look like now I wanna talk a little bit about keyword research keyword research and we talked a little bit about this in the last lesson it’s something that you can use to figure out what words do your customers use do they call your product that they call it high waist shorts or do they call it fold-over shorts like what is the name that they would assign to your product. So you use keyword research to make sure that you find the correct term now with my business what I did is I looked up would it be better to have dance clothes in my title or dance where well I’ve found out that more people called it dance wear than they do dance clothes. So that’s why I wanted to target dance wear. So your domain name should have a keyword in it. So for me it was dance fair. So I knew that it had to be something dance where com originally we had the name bailar dance work because it meant to dance in Spanish turned out there’s a lot of problems with that mostly people couldn’t spell it. So we ended up going with bdancewear.com but the key was dance where is right in the name of my domain in the name of our company people know what we sell there’s no question what does B dance wear itself well they sell dance wear that’s pretty obvious. So keep that in mind with your site I was recently helping out a friend and he wanted to sell luxury pillows and he came up with all these different you know brand names he’s like what if we call like I love pillows Holle and I’m like you know that’s good but it’s not it’s not great because someone that loves pillows it could be specific specialty pillows it could be throw pillows could be this that whatever I’m likely you really want to sell luxury pillows why don’t we call it Leigh’s luxury pillows calm and not only in that there’s a couple other things we can talk about here it has a literation it has these luxury pillows it’s easy to remember but on top of that it’s it has the luxury pillows right in the title it implies the benefit. So another thing to keep in mind when you’re naming your company if you can imply some kind of benefit that’s way better a good example of this would be healthy choice healthy choice is a company where they sell food and it implies right there it’s like oh I’m gonna buy you know three healthy choice dinners that sounds like they’re healthy. So if you can apply in a benefit that’s great as well branding is it could be a whole course on its own. So I’m not gonna dive too deep on this you probably already have some ideas but the big key takeaway from this is you should have a key word in your domain name if possible it’ll help with SEO juice it’ll help you get to number one on Google. So the it’s really easy to buy a domain name I have a walkthrough below on how to actually do it if you’ve never done it before it’s super easy you can go to GoDaddy and get a domain name for $. if you’ve never done it before if you have bought a domain name before I recommend namecheap.com because it’s actually it’s cheaper than GoDaddy’s normal rates the first one GoDaddy gives you for a dollar after that they charge you I think fifteen dollars a year to have a domain name. So walk through below you can click on that and see how to buy a domain name but it’s super easy to do. So now let’s talk about getting a logo. So getting a logo is one of those things that people make very complicated I think it’s important to do from the beginning and once again remember your logo doesn’t have to be perfect right from the get-go it’s an iterative process Coca Cola’s logo has changed a lot of times in the hundred years plus that it’s been around. So remember that you should probably at least start off with a logo and you can get people’s feedback see what they think. So to do this you can go to Fiverr get a local for five bucks or you can go to upwork um the effect of Ecommerce logo I got off up work for $ was it a good deal I don’t know maybe not you know if you’re not sure and you don’t have a lot of money to spend five is probably not a bad way to start now if you’re on the up like I’m the high end of things and you really want to have a great logo right from the beginning designs it’s expensive but it’s worth it from everyone I’ve talked to that’s what they say I’m gonna actually be getting a B dancewear com logo from designs and the near future here but basically the way it works is a bunch of like depending on what package you pick people submit designs for your logo and then you pick which ones you like you say I like this one this one in this one and then people use those as a base and they design a new logo for you. So you can use any of them that you want but ultimately if you’re decent at graphic design you can just mock-up your own logo that’s what I did a bead answer.com in fact I still I’ve made over , dollars with the crappy logo that I made myself. So if you know what you’re doing a little bit with Photoshop then go ahead and make up your own logo but guys this is an important step.
