In this episode of the effective ecommerce podcast we’re going to be talking about social media marketing. Specifically the big three or four the big three would be Facebook Pinterest and Instagram in my opinion those three I think are the best for internet marketing. We’ll also talk a little bit about YouTube but I think YouTube’s so important and such a big topic and to me it’s almost outside of this idea of social media its own separate beast so in the next episode we’ll dive in deep into YouTube but in this episode we’re really going to focus on Instagram, Pinterest and Facebook and in my opinion it’s in that order that they are as useful as they are so I think in Instagram is the most useful Pinterest is the second most important and Facebook is the least out of those three most important and the reason for that is there’s a lot of different reasons but one of them is that Facebook it’s kind of pay to play now and we’ll dive in deeper what I mean by this later it used to be awesome for internet marketing but the problem with it now is that they make money a lot of money off their advertising so if you’re just posting and you’re not paying they don’t really give you a lot of exposure so that’s a really important point but let’s talk about some of the general strategy so you probably know what social media is if you don’t I don’t know even living under a rock or something like that but social media is basically just a way for people to connect on the Internet to share things that they’re interested in so Instagram really it was really important for sharing photos but now it’s also starting to share videos same thing with Facebook was a way to connect with other people share photos and now videos also is becoming very important Pinterest is a little bit different it’s almost like a scrap I don’t know if scrapbooks the right word but it’s basically a place where more than anything women tend to get together and they can share they can pin ideas for recipes pin ideas for different clothing pin ideas on a bunch of different stuff I mean there are some men that use it but very few from what I can tell I’ve never really used it out of personal use but the perfect use case I think for Pinterest is if you are my sister was recently she had wedding and she wanted she had a bunch of different ideas so she had a board or she just was atom put all our different ideas like these centerpieces she likes this whatever another one might be recipes you might have a board of paleo recipes and we’ll talk more about all this later in this episode but it might be if you have a paleo diet you follow the Paleo diet and you want to a board or you can pin all the different recipes and that ‘show those are important so let’s talk about a general strategy for all the different social media platforms first the general strategy that seems to work the best is Gary Vaynerchuk who has a few different books he’s on YouTube you can check him out he talks about Jab Jab Jab right hook and so what does this mean it means give good content give good content give more good content and then ask for the sale so in boxing you jab you jab jab and then you find the right hook you’re not trying to knock someone out with the jab you ‘retrying to knock someone out with the right hook obviously that’s a kind of an aggressive metaphor but with social media the idea isn’t to constantly be asking saying hey % offer go buy our products hey go do this the idea is to have people follow you and want to follow you because you have such great information and such great content that they want to follow you so on Instagram or Facebook this might be you post such interesting and cool photos that people naturally want to follow you and then one out of every four five six that the ratio you can determine what very infrequently you share something about your product so when I think of something like this I’m thinking like GoPro. GoPro I haven’t really followed their Instagram but I’m willing to bet they do this most the videos they share probably aren’t talking about their product it’s probably videos that have been filmed using their product and just really cool videos and then every once in a while they might say hey we’re releasing the new GoPro and it’s amazing and you need to go buy it so this should be your strategy too so to use this in a little bit more context let’s talk about be dance for first I might post photos on Instagram of different dancers wearing our products but never selling anything just showing like hey look at least I look how cute she looks in her new black be dance or shorts or whatever it is and then constantly be posting things like that cost be posting good pictures that dancers would want to look at and then one out of every or I might post and sashay we have a 10 % off sale go purchase now there’s two mistakes I see people making all the time one is they’re constantly right hooking they’re constantly asking for the sale but the other is they never ask for the sale or they never try to get the email address or whatever it is out of people and so you want to find a balance you want to find a balance of keeping people interested in entertain with your content but at the same time helping your business because that’s ultimately why we’re doing this so jab jab jab right hook the next thing to talk about here is native contact native content teach platform so a photo that would do really well on Instagram or maybe even on Facebook just wouldn’t do well on Pinterest people go to Pinterest to find recipes to find how-to little infographics they don’t go on there asoften to find beautiful photos on Instagram and Facebook people want to see beautiful photos specifically on Instagram people want to see extra beautiful photos on Facebook it tends Tobe more photos of their friends and family so that’s something to keep in mind depending on what kind of content you’re creating or depending on what platform you’re on you’re on and you ‘retrying to share your content it should be a different content if that makes sense so once again a YouTube video for instance YouTube you might want a five to ten minute video explaining how your whatever explaining something it doesn’t really matter what but then for Facebook you might want AONE minute video and for Instagram you might want a photo and for Pinterest you might want that in like a long infographic so different platforms require different content for the most part and you should try to have content that syncs with that platform that content that people that are on the platform would expect so that’s the second point and then point number three is it needs to be good content you shouldn’t post and you shouldn’t share junk if you’re doing that people aren’t going to like what you what you have to share they’re not going to follow you or they’re going to quickly unfollow you we’ve all seen it we’ve all seen especially maybe our friends try to share stuff about their company or their business and it’s just junk it’s like we don’t want to see it should be helpful it should be useful to peoples for be dancer on Pinterest we do dance like how to DIY your dance costume we’re not trying to sell our product nine times out of ten it does link them to our website and they’re they can signup using their email they can sign up to get our DIY guide and then from the email we’ll try to will sell them we’ll send them you know different coupons and stuff like that so that’s one of the things that we do on Pinterest so with Pinterest it’s all about DIY and stuff for performance nut butter my other company we would do recipes we do how to create a paleo whatever cupcake and use performance nut butter as the icing wed how to create all these you know different recipes and we tried to incorporate performance nut butter as many recipes as possible but it doesn’t necessarily need to be and maybe even we could say you know you could substitute almond butter for performance nut butter but the whole point would be trying to make it trying to use our product as recipes with performance and a lot of the other thing we would do on Pinterest is maybe work out plans work out ideas tips on how to like seven tips sustained keto the ketogenic diets all these different things so I want to add one other thing I didn’t actually have in minutes but I think it’s really important to say is in my opinion the best way too content and this is purely my opinion I’m sure a lot of people disagree with me is have some kind of a hub platforms for us the hub platform is YouTube we for both well for B dancer it’s YouTube we’ll make a DIY dance costume video and it’ll be you know how to rhinestone your dance costume then we’ll turn that into Pinterest pin and we’ll do four steps to do that then we’ll turn it into a blog article we’ll send it to a writer they’ll write about it then we’ll share that we haven’t really done this too much we’ll share that on Instagram or share that on Facebook and I think that is the best way to do it so it’s that one YouTube video is different content for all our different platforms now it’s an it’s a video on YouTube button Pinterest it’s a long image that haste step-by-step on how to do it so it’s definitely different and then on Facebook we probably would repost the video but on Instagram we might even cut down the video and just do like quick snippets which do I’ve been I’ve done little bit but it’s just not worth it for us to do that too often so I don’t spend too much money on that so with all that being said let’s go platform by platform talk about some of the strengths weaknesses all that fun stuffs in my opinion the best platform for social media internet marketing is Instagram currently now this is going to change it’s just it’s just the nature of things but right now it’s Instagram and let me explain to you what Instagram is just in case you don’t know and if you do know you know you can skip past this part but maybe I have a different definition than you do but Instagram Isa place where people go to share images and video as well I think it is to some degree about following your friends following people but I think it’s to stronger degree about following people you don’t know following influencers following people it’s kind of a wave like a Facebook you really only follow your friends like it’s really you have friends and that’s the most that’s the key to Facebook with Instagram a big part of it is following people you don’t know look kind of getting a little glimpse into their life and people tend to polish themselves a lot I mean they do this on Facebook as well but people tend to take really nice Instagram photos they recently well somewhat recently added stories as well where you can kind of take photos and they’ll go to your story and they disappear after hours basically ripping off snapchat so that is an important development as well the demographics tend to be pretty wide-ranging but its Millennials like myself I’d say to is approximately the range and it’s probably even more narrow it’s probably like to or something like that but from what I can tell it tends to be I like I like Instagram for marketing because for whatever reason I’m sure I’m wrong on this it seems to be a lot of people they care more I don’t know the best way to put it but it seems to be that they have more money and that’s probably not true but that’s just the vibe that I get from what I see on Instagram and I’m sure it’s like selective bias there but anyways the strategy behind Instagram in my opinion there’s a few different strategies if you want to really grow your Instagram account and spread the word one of them is to like follow comment on other people’s photos because when you do this they see that your company or you as an individual are liking commenting and following and so what are they going to do they’re going to go check out your Instagram page they’re going to follow you they’re going to like you they’re going to check out your website tyro figure out who you are so for performance nut butter this has been huge for me so far and what I’ve done is you know I go to a bunch of different people and there’s automated ways to do this I don’t want to talk about this too much for different reasons because it’s against the rules technically but there’s automation ways to do this I would check out the program follow liker which is a program you can download on your computer and there’s similar ones too you can download on your computer and it’ll automatically follow like comment on people’s photos it’s probably not the best it’s not you know it’s not the best thing to do but I know a lot of people that have grown really big businesses just doing that so that’s one thing too you can do it automated in an automated way automatically or you Cando it yourself and if you’re going to do it yourself one of the strategies is to go after influencers go after big-name people and try to get them to basically share your stuff you can ask them he can I send you a free product in return will you post about it on your account you can do all these kind of crazy things like that and that’s really important so it’s a great way to build relationships with high level influential people another thing you Cando for marketing is hashtags and if you’re not familiar what a hashtag is it’s you might post I might post a picture of performance nut butter and then I might say hashtag Quito and Quito is a type of diet that’s high in fat so anyone looking at the hashtag Quito will see my product and see performance not butter and be like oh this is interesting now I don’t know how great this is for marketing a lot of marketers say oh my god this is the holy grail you need toad as many hashtags as possible I don’t know if that’s % true but Indefinitely think it’s worth adding four or five some people say max it out at but I’ve been I’ve been told by people that if you add a lot of hashtags sir Graham can tell that you’re a brand and they’re likely to just like not likely not to show your image to as many of your followers so that’s a big thing Facebook the reason Facebook is so low on this list is they used to if you’ve followed or liked a company then you would get those any photo they share would go in your newsfeed but now what they’ve done is they’ve suppressed it so if it’s a company page they’re less likely to share the photos unless the company pays Instagram it’s probably going to eventually do this as well slantways just to recap here like follow comment use hashtags go after a big name people try to create relationships and encourage you can encourage people to comment and engage with your photos which is important I don’t know how much Instagram is doing this right now but I believe pretty soon depending on the amount of gage engagement your photo gets is probably going to be related to how much they share your photo with your followers just like Facebook does so that’s kind of the recap there next up is Pinterest so a Pinterest I already kind of explained it’s perfect for people that are trying to pin a bunch of different recipes try to collect a bunch of different images or products that they would maybe buy you know it’s almost like it’s not a scrapbook but like a place to gather information and people also use it as a search engine some people will search recipes on threesome people will search how to fix you know whatever how to DIY something the demographics are strongly female there tends to be way more women on Pinterest than any of the other platforms relative to how many men there are so if you have product that caters towards women ores preferentially used by women it’s probably great for a performance nut butter even though my products not designed specifically for women in mind I’m going to do on Pinterest I would do recipes I would do how to use performance nut butter to create delicious cake or whatever it is so some content ideas for Pinterest include DIY at DIY a dance costume had aid you know I don’t know any random like around the house thing how to make arable how to do this try to think what your product is and try to use your products somehow in a DIY sense you know if your product helps I don’t know relieve back pain show back pain tips whatever it is recipes is another big one if you have a product that’s food or food-related recipes are perfect keywords are very important with all of these so keep that in mind try to figure out what people are going to be searching for on Pinterest and make sure that your images name that make sure that though that text appears in your description of it and there is a lot of other content ideas for Pinterest I’m not an expert at Pinterest by any means but I do know it works to drive traffic to your website I think our third biggest source of traffic is Pinterest so that’s been pretty cool and I definitely recommend it it’s pretty easy and one of the good things about Pinterest as opposed to Facebook or Instagram is there’s a long term like gain there you know same thing with YouTube if you have a YouTube video overtime it’ll actually get more and more traffic and a little snowball with Instagram after a few hours nobody will ever see that post again unless they go back through your profile same thing with Facebook after a few hours today no one’s ever going to see that post again and Pinterest there tends to be a snowball effect like a few people like it and then more people like it and share it and pin it and pin it and it’s just a total viral effect right there so last but not least is Facebook and everybody knows that Facebook is if you’re watching this video and you don’t know what Facebook is I don’t even know what to say after listening to this podcast I guess I should say as well demographics tend to be pretty much about everyone not so much younger people younger people tend to be using Instagram or snapchat and specifically snapchat the most and right now the reason I’m not going to talk about it in depth too much is I think the only way to really do Facebook successfully is to pay for it to do Facebook ads and if you don’t want to do Facebook ads it’s tough it’s not impossible but it’s definitely very tough so posts you can ask people to tag friends say hey like for instance with performance nut butter I might post a picture performance nut butter and say tag a friend that that would love this product that might not work the best I might say tag a friend who would like this post or no Tiger friend that would like performance nut butter for a chance to win a free box of performance unbutters you could do other things like that trying to get engagement on your post is what’s most important another thing I’ve done before I don’t know if this is fully kosher but you can do some kind of competition so we’ve done for B dancer wear of the month and dancer of the month is a competition where basically we put up different people submit photos to us of them wearing their dance clothing we put it up and we get them to vote and what happens they go ask all their friends and family to vote for their picture and whoever gets the most votes wins dancer of the month and they wouldn’t like a fun little box so you can do all kinds of different things like that you can also ask a question you can say hey how would you eat performance nut butter question marker why user why should you in a box of performance nut butter and then what you can do is that’ll encourage people to comment on it which isn’t engagement which Facebook likes and the more engagement your post gets the more likely it’s it is to share it with more people so asking questions can be very useful so I’m going to kind of wrap up here YouTube like I said will be the next episode and I think YouTube in going to be it’s a great tool if you have any kind of an e-commerce business I think it’s one of the best tools out there for easily getting traffic easily getting your face your name your branding front of people but let’s quickly go over everything I said we can do all the bold points and then we’ll wrap up here but before we do if you haven’t yet got iTunes search effective e-commerce and iTunes leave a five star review itis hugely helpful to me and on top of that if you leave a five star review every month I’m picking a new winner to a free one-on-one consulting session with I might even pick two people month if I very well might do that jostle enjoy talking to listeners and viewers of the YouTube channel and podcast so you’re going to iTunes leave a -star review and enter doing in a free one-on-one consulting session but on top of that it really helps me out it really helps the podcast out the more reviews we get the more the better quality guests we’re going to be able to get on in the future now first episodes or so is going to beat three like e-commerce just giant tutorial but eventually it’s going to beat’s going to I’m going to try to get some guests on and try to learn some stuff personally and try to share all this knowledge with you so that being said let’s go ahead and go over everything we talked up is just an overview of everything going on right here so the first thing is the general strategies are jab jab right hook post native content post really good high quality content use kind of a hub-and-spoke model but I mean by that is if you have YouTube video make sure you do a post about it on Pinterest and Instagram everywhere Instagram strategy is the like follow comment people use hash tag high quality photos very important tyro create relationships with big-name people and then let’s see you can encourage people to comment and engage on your Instagram photos so great way to build relationships Instagram next up is Pinterest I post good quality content post DIY post recipes and I don’t know if I mentioned this but you might want to do for meetings for instance we do how to DIY dance costume and it’s you know step by step on how to write some and dance costume at the bottom I say click here to see the full video and when they click on there it takes them to a page where they can see the video or you can click here to get the DIY guide when they click there it’ll take them to a page to get you DIY guide next up is Facebook kind of put pay-to-play you can definitely experiment with it try doing some just organic Facebook marketing but you can ask people to try to engage with your posts I’m not going to belabor this one too much because I really don’t think it’s that powerful anymore I’m sure there’s someone out there they can prove me wrong but Facebook wants your money it’s good to know and maybe in the future I’ll do an episode on how to market on Facebook just because it’s important to know for when you do decide to run Facebook ads but anyways that is it to wrap that up right here next episode will be about YouTube and remember every Monday and Thursday weave a new podcast episode for you and the rest the days will be Tuesday Wednesday Friday Tuesday Wednesday I’ve got YouTube videos every Tuesday and Wednesday are my highest quality YouTube videos you know my effective e-commerce YouTube channel check those out Fridays are the new performance nut butter vlogs just updating everybody about what’s going on with checklist for starting your business it includes about plus marketing ideas includes manual for how to hire a virtual assistant clues a bunch of really good stuff you can go there if I could be cumbersome comma check that out and thanks for listening this podcast thanks for watching it if you’re on YouTube and have a great rest your day
